Maximus Simmons, an 18-year-old senior at Oakland High School, has emerged as a powerful voice advocating for youth representation in local government. In his role as a second-term student board member with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), Simmons has spent the past year leading multiple civic initiatives aimed at amplifying the influence of young people in policymaking. His leadership extends to founding the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, a platform dedicated to ensuring youth perspectives are integrated into the city’s decisions.

Known for his strong commitment to social change, Simmons has already made significant strides in local civic life. His efforts include raising thousands of dollars to support underfunded classrooms, addressing gaps in educational resources, and driving initiatives that empower students in the policymaking process.

In a city renowned for its Black leadership legacy, Simmons has worked tirelessly to strengthen this tradition, aligning his actions with the city’s values of inclusivity and social justice. Through his work with the OUSD and as a member of the youth council, Simmons authored a pivotal legislative resolution that secured $1 million to restore and expand restorative justice programs in Oakland schools, a step aimed at transforming discipline policies and fostering healing within the community.

Mayor Barbara Lee, who made history as the first Black woman to serve as Oakland’s mayor, has lauded Simmons for his remarkable impact. Mayor Lee highlighted how Simmons embodies the potential of youth leadership, noting that his work is a testament to the positive outcomes that arise when young people are trusted with responsibility and empowered through mentorship. Her praise reflects the growing recognition of Simmons’ influence and his efforts to make tangible, lasting change in the city.

Simmons’ multifaceted leadership journey is particularly inspiring as he continues to balance his senior year with high-level civic engagement. Supporters emphasize that his story serves as a powerful example for the next generation of students, showing that leadership is not defined by age but by vision and action.

Looking ahead, Simmons remains committed to expanding the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and further advocating for underfunded schools in Oakland. His goal is not only to raise more resources but also to ensure that young voices continue to play a critical role in shaping the policies that impact their communities. Through his work, Simmons proves that youth engagement in government is a catalyst for positive change.
