The X-Files, the iconic sci-fi thriller that captivated audiences throughout the 1990s, is getting a fresh, modern reboot and Oakland’s own Ryan Coogler is set to lead the way. Known for his groundbreaking work in film, Coogler, fresh off the success of his 16 Oscar nominations for Sinners, has been confirmed to write and direct the pilot episode for the new series, which has been greenlit by Hulu.
Danielle Deadwyler, celebrated for her powerful performances in Till and The Piano Lesson, will star as the co-lead. Alongside Coogler, The X-Files original creator, Chris Carter, will return as executive producer, ensuring the show retains the essence of its roots while taking it into a new era.
Originally premiering in 1993, The X-Files became one of the most influential science-fiction series of its time, with its dark, suspenseful plots revolving around FBI agents Mulder and Scully as they investigated a variety of paranormal phenomena. Its success extended beyond television, spawning two feature films and influencing the careers of numerous writers and producers, including Vince Gilligan, who later created Breaking Bad.
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Coogler shared his excitement for the reboot, stating that he plans to blend the series’ trademark “monster-of-the-week” episodes with a larger, overarching conspiracy plot. Reflecting on the personal impact of the original show, Coogler remarked, “That show is what I used to watch with my mom, bro. It’s one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made.”
The reboot is highly anticipated by fans of the original series and newcomers alike, offering a perfect opportunity to revisit the mysteries of the unknown in a contemporary context. As Coogler sets the stage for a new chapter in the X-Files saga, all eyes will be on how he reimagines this beloved classic for a new generation.
